Lenovo IdeaPad S10

The starting configuration is a bit cheaper, offering 512MB of RAM and an 80GB hard drive for $439, while our upgrades (which are not currently available on Lenovos Web site), should come in about $550.

Specification
  • Price as reviewed Starting price $550 - $439
  • Processor 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270
  • Memory 1GB, DDR2 SDRAM 533MHz
  • Hard drive 160GB 5,400rpm
  • Chipset Mobile Intel 945 Express
  • Graphics Intel GMA 950
  • Operating System Windows XP Home Edition SP3
  • Dimensions (WDH) 9.9x7.3x1.0 inches
  • Screen size (diagonal) 10.2 inches
  • System weight / Weight with AC adapter 2.7 - 3.4 pounds
  • Category Netbook
  • Lenovo IdeaPad S10 Average for category (Netbook)
  • Video VGA out VGA out
  • Audio headphone microphone jacks headphone microphone jacks
  • Data 2 USB 2.0, SD card reader 2 USB 2.0, SD card reader
  • Expansion ExpressCard 34 None
  • Networking Ethernet, 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth modem, Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
  • Optical drive None None
We liked the chunky, squared off design, and the IdeaPad S10 is a little thinner than Asus thick 10 inch Eee PC 1000. Theres a decent sized keyboard (for a Netbook), which doesnt feel the need to knock out a row of function keys or mess around too much with the standard layout (were looking at you, Dell).

The touch pad is marginally smaller than the one on Dells Mini 9, but we liked the slightly textured surface on the S10, which kept our fingers from dragging, as can happen on overly glossy touch pad surfaces. We were also very pleased to see an ExpressCard 34 slot, which is rare on smaller systems, but very useful for adding after market extras, such as a mobile broadband modem.

Speakers, usually an afterthought on Netbooks, were located under a grill that runs along the front lip of the system. One should never depend on tiny speakers like this, but the volume was at least loud for basic YouTube purposes. The 10.2 inch wide screen display has a 1,024x600 pixel native resolution, which is standard for 9 and 10 inch Netbooks, and not too far removed from the 1.280x800 pixel resolution common in most laptops up to 15 inches.

With Intels now standard 1.6GHz Atom N270 CPU, specifically designed for low power Netbooks, the Lenovo S10 is not going to match up with Lenovos normally high powered business systems or deliver the same level of performance youd get from even an inexpensive Core 2 Duo. Still, for Web surfing, email, and working on office documents, which is 90 percent of what most people do on their laptops anyway, the S10 performed about as expected, closely matching the Asus Eee PC 901 and MSI Wind in our iTunes performance test.

Sony Ericsson W995a

Despite its many features, Sony Ericsson W995a manages to be rather compact (3.8 inches tall by 1.9 inches wide by 0.6 inch thick) and lightweight (4.0 ounces). The phone travels well and it has a solid feel, but we noticed that the slider mechanism wobbled just a bit. The W995a comes in progressive black, cosmic silver, and energetic red, though the features are the same on all models. Sony Ericsson W995as real estate is dominated by a gorgeous 2.6 inch display.

Supporting 16.7 million colors (320x240 pixels), it lends itself well to still graphics, photos, and simple animations. The menu interface is standard Sony Ericsson you can choose from four styles, but we consider the list and grid options to be the most intuitive. You can adjust the brightness to your liking. Sony Ericsson can stumble when designing navigation controls, but the W995s come off pretty well.

The circular toggle and central OK button are large and pleasantly tactile. The surrounding navigation controls, which are shaped like half circles, are a bit small, but theyre also raised above the surface of the phone. Youll find two soft keys, a clear button, and a control that activates a user customizable shortcut menu. Spacious Talk and End or power keys sit on either side of its navigation array. The keypad doesnt fare quite as well, unfortunately.

The buttons are rather small and they have a slippery feel. Compared with other slider phones we could dial without looking, but it wasnt the most comfortable experience for rapid dialing or texting. Also, were worried about long term durability since the area that surrounds the keys "gives" just a bit when we pressed down. Its worth noting that a similar phone the Sony Ericsson W580i developed cracks over time.

On the left spine youll find a Walkman player shortcut and the proprietary Sony Ericsson headset jack. Were hoping that before too long Sony Ericsson joins other manufacturers in moving to a standard Micro-USB charger connection. On the right spine are a camera shortcut, music player controls, and a volume rocker. The latter doubles as a zoom control for the camera, though its a little too small for our tastes.

The 3.5 millimeter headset jack rests conveniently on the top of the phone between stereo speakers. Youll be able to use your own headset while carrying the phone in a pocket. On the rear side are the camera lens, flash, and kickstand. The former two are in the top right corner so that Sony Ericsson W995a resembles a standalone camera from behind. The camera controls are easily accessible when the phone is the horizontal position just be sure to keep your fingers out of the way.

As we mentioned, you can use the kickstand to prop the W995 on a table without resting it against your hand or a book. It certainly makes for convenient media viewing, though the kickstands hinge is rather loose. Wed prefer that it click into place in the open position. And for what its worth, wed like it even better if the display offered better video quality.

Qtrax Promises Legal P2P Music Sharing Service the Impossible

Qtrax Music Free ServiceQtrax, a new P2P music sharing service. Heres the skinny: The service is free, completely. Qtrax offers an unlimited service. It is supported by the four major labels, as well as smaller, niche music groups, and that means it will have a start-up music library of over 25 million songs. That is about four times bigger than iTunes, and about 100% cheaper. Very, very soon.

Monday, in fact, is the day the service goes live, and we cannot hold our wee were so excited. Initially, only Windows Vista and XP will be supported, but the Macboys and girls see some action on March 18th.

The system will work by tracking all downloads, royalties will then be issued accordingly. It isnt too clear how that revenue will be generated, but expect some anal advertising to bombard a PC near you if you do give it a whirl.

Samsung Solstice SGH A887

Samsung Solstice SGH-A887 offers a trim design with rounded corners. Its not quite as angular as the Samsung Behold or the Eternity, though it lacks the Highlights color choice and patterned back side. We wouldnt call it stylish, but its not unattractive either. It measures 4.3 inches by 2.1 inches by 0.5 inch and weighs 3.3 ounces, which gives it a comfortable and sturdy feel in the hand. The 3 inch display is just big enough, though we wouldnt want it to be any smaller.

With support for 262.000 colors and 400x240 pixels, it has a pleasant resolution that shows colors and graphics well. It wont knock your socks off, but its suitably bright and vibrant for phone of this caliber. Samsungs TouchWiz interface gives you instant access to a variety of features, though we wish its customization options were more extensive. The icon-based menu interface is simple and intuitive.

Permanent touch icons on the bottom of the screen open the dialpad, the phone book, and the main menu. The dialpad and QWERTY keyboard are unchanged from previous Samsung touch screen models. The dialpad features large alphanumeric numbers for calling and sending texts using T9 predictive text. The keys are somewhat small, but you can use T9 here as well. Basic punctuation is surfaced on the primary keyboard, but you must click through to a second keyboard for numbers and symbols.

The Solstices accelerometer works across many applications. As with other Samsung touch screen phones, you can switch between the keypad and keyboard by rotating the phone to the left (rotating it to the right will result in an upside down keyboard). The handset also offers a motion detection feature that will automatically mute a call or an alarm tone when you turn the phone and place it face down on a surface. The display is responsive, whether youre selecting icons or scrolling through long lists.

You can adjust the intensity of the vibrating feedback and change the displays calibration. As for other customization options, you can change the displays wallpaper, brightness, backlight time, font type, and greeting message. Three physical buttons sit below the display a Talk button, a back control, and the End and power key. The calling controls are flush, but the back button is easy to find by feel. The volume rocker rests on the left spine while a combined headset or charger jack and camera shutter sit on the right spine.

The jack is proprietary and you can use only one peripheral at a time. Also on the right spine youll find a control that opens a shortcut menu for the browser, the games menu, the music player, the messaging app, and the dialpad. Theres also a command to end any open application. The camera lens and self-portrait mirror rest on the phones back side and the memory card slot is inconveniently located behind the battery.

Chrome OS and Android are Ace r

The demise of the home computer has been quite amazing, in the last few years Chromebooks has outsold traditional laptops under $299 on Amazon.com. Acer lost money and Microsoft have seen limp sales of its not so hard OS Windows 9.

Confidence in Windows has rescinded some what, leaving a gap for Google to start to make room for itself.

While I have played with Chromebooks at the Google campus during Google I/O this year, it did have a brilliant user experience however it does miss some vital functionality which makes it hard to make the leap off my Laptop (which runs Windows 8 - I admit it.)

To Fix Chromebook, Google need to add :-

  1. Support for local Network - Most people have SAN or NAS devices, could we have a native method of browsing please.
  2. Flash - Yes you heard me, FLASH, you know the Adobe platform of yesterday which most sites still seem to use.
  3. Additional Storage Options - I would like a bigger hard disk, hey stop laughing, disk !
  4. Merge some Android Apps into the OS.

Just for starters, a simple 1,2,3 and 4 and Id be sold.

Microsoft are struggling to pimp its wares and its shoddy Xbox One release shows how out of touch the company is these days. They could go the way Sony did some years ago and lose its golden egg, Sony was slow to respond to Walkman soft sales, and look what happened to them. Could Google about to lay a new egg and serve it with Bacon ?!

Acer have today said they will start to focus more on Chromebooks and Android in placement of its Windows long term strategy. The companys reported consolidated revenue was $2.97 billion, down 2.8 percent for the quarter or down 19.2 percent for the year. Its operating loss was $20.35 million, which is no small beans. Chrome is already making 3% of Acers shipments of PCs are a relatively low price point, Jim Wang has said "Android is very popular in smartphones and dominant in tablets," he added. "I also see a new market there for Chromebooks."

Good luck to em I say !

Totally new Xbox Live experience Microsoft hints

Xbox live imageMake no mistake, weve seen curious job postings lead to changes in our favorite gizmos before, and hopefully, a recent ad on Microsofts website is no different. A listing seeking a Program Manager explicitly states that its looking for someone to "be involved in the next release of Xbox," and wants that very individual to be "part of the Xbox Live team thats responsible for creating a completely new way for mainstream audiences to enjoy the Xbox and Live."

Better still, the description suggests that the team would be "building the games, the console interface and logic, and the server support for a totally new Live experience." Granted, theres nothing more to go on than this at the moment, but we cant help but be a teensy bit excited about the notion of an overhauled Xbox Live.

Back to the Future for Data Storage

Building a massive, distributed datastore which can service requests at an extremely high throughput is something that weve focused on at Google. We created something called Bigtable that underlies the datastore in App Engine. The design for Bigtable focused on scalability across a distributed system so it may operate a bit differently than databases youve worked with before, such as not supporting joins. This isnt an accident -- when you build a system that can scale to the size that Bigtable can theres no way to do a general purpose join on data sets that size and still have them be performant.

Google isnt alone in offering an non-Relational datastore to enable scaling. For example, Amazon has SimpleDB:

A traditional, clustered relational database requires a sizable upfront capital outlay, is complex to design, and often requires a DBA to maintain and administer. Amazon SimpleDB is dramatically simpler, requiring no schema, automatically indexing your data and providing a simple API for storage and access.

There are also a range of non-relational open source datastores now available such as CouchDB and Hypertable. Those are just two examples, there are many more.

While you might think this is all new, its actually a bit of a return to the past. You see, there was a time when "RDBMS" wasnt always the answer regardless of what the question was. At the time Codd published his paper, "A Relational Model of Data for Large Shared Data Banks," there were many different approaches to datastores. It was only in the 80s that relational databases won the majority of the mindshare. Having settled on a single metaphor the industry has developed many tools and techniques to make developing on a relational database easier.

Unfortunately that majority mindshare is also a problem because while RDBMS are useful in many situations, they are not useful in all situations. Their dominance in the mindshare means that useful alternatives arent used, and huge amounts of time and money can be wasted trying to force non-relational problems into a relational model.

We are in the middle of a renaissance in data storage with the application of many new ideas and techniques; theres huge potential for breaking out of thinking about data storage in just one way. Michael Stonebraker pointed out in his paper, "One Size Fits All": An Idea Whose Time Has Come and Gone, that there are common datastore use cases, such as Data Warehousing and Stream Processing that are not well served by a general purpose RDBMS and that abandoning the general purpose RDBMS can give you a performance increase of one or two orders of magnitude.

Its an exciting time, and the takeaway here isnt to abandon the relational database, which is a very mature technology that works great in its domain, but instead to be willing to look outside the RDBMS box when looking for storage solutions.

Macworld Expo Keynote

Well, it’s come and gone-- the 2009 Macworld Expo keynote speech. You can watch all 90 minutes of it, including a couple of songs by Tony Bennett-- here’s the link. I have to say that Phil Schiller did an admirable job, considering what he was up against.

Here’s the keynote in a nutshell:

There’s a new version of iLife coming out this month, which means updated iPhoto, Garage Band, iWeb, and iMovie.

The highlight of iLife: face-recognition in iPhoto. It can find a face in a photo and if you tell it who that face belongs to, iPhoto will search its database of photos and make an album of other pictures with that face in it. Neat. I can’t wait to try it. But I’ll have to wait until the end of January, same as everyone else. The new iMovie is pretty neat too (watch the first 40 minutes of the keynote speech and you’ll see iPhoto and iMovie demonstrated).

iWork is also getting an upgrade. I already liked iWork but I’m looking forward to seeing the new version.

The 17-inch MacBook Pro has been updated. Now it looks like the other MacBook Pro models (aluminum case, big-clicker trackpad). Its battery is supposed to give you 8 hours of use but you can’t take it out yourself. It’s all sealed up, like an iPhone’s.

I’ll be at Macworld Thursday to see it all in person, and if it’s super-groovy I will let you know all about it.

Meanwhile, here’s a link to the new iPhoto goodies, and another link to the new iMovie stuff.

Jolla community together jolla com A peek in after a month

together.jolla.com is a portal between Jollas customers, app developers and the sailors working at Jolla. It was taken into use at 12-Dec-2013, and after a month in use Jolla phone owners have found it as a welcome and a well used service. More than 2500 questions are posted, and more than 1500 of them have at least one answer. Adding all the answers and comments there are more than 16 000 posts so far.

Jolla has developed the portal further by adding a Jolla logo to all the members working at Jolla, and currently they are welcoming some more moderators from the user side. Users have done their best avoiding duplicate posts and tags, but as there are many of us, theres some cleaning to do all the time. Were doing it together, and in my overall experience the portal is working somewhat great, but it can always get better.

Most important issues (TOP10, lifted up by the users) in the beginning have been:
  1. Differentiate native SailfishOS and Android apps in Jolla store
  2. Landscape mode in keyboard, gestures, browser and messages
  3. Support for CalDav-based calendars (e.g. Google Calendar)
  4. Offline turn by turn navigation in Maps
  5. mms - multimedia message [closed]
  6. After screen time out, return to last active app
  7. Folder support in app launcher
  8. Add possibility to configure what is shown on the lock screen
  9. Cover-action on settings app
  10. WiFi tethering [closed]
Jolla is responding to their users wishes, and most of the requests above (and many others) are already roadmapped by Jolla. A roadmap tag is added to the questions by Jolla after they have taken the issue under development. Only 3 of the top10 questions are still waiting for a solution:
  • #4 (Jollas answer: Were thinking about it)
  • #8 (Jollas answer: Good explanation why it is the way it is, but still looking into this)
  • #9 (Jollas answer actually seems like its roadmapped, but for some reason it isnt)
If you have a Jolla phone but you havent joined this portal yet, I recommend doing so. Not only to get your questions answered (either by Jolla or other users), but also to be in the heart of this unlike community. We Do It Together (DIT) and we welcome everybody along.

7 0 Ultra thin Quad Core Bmorn Blade K22 tablet New Exposure

Talking the word "Blade", some people may think about Motorola Blade series mobile phones. At that moment, the XT910 has attacted lots of attention cause of its ultra-thin body design. While, today there is another ultra-thin quad-core new Android tablet computer we would like to share - Bmorn K22.

Since official can name it as "Blade", we can imagin its thickness would be very thin. According to the news, this new tablet computer would have 7.2mm only ultra-thin (would be one of the thinnest quad-core Android tablets at the moment). And K22 also has a 7.0 inch IPS touchscreen, but the definition is unknown yet. It would come with quad-core chipset (comprehensive performance would be stronger than Nvidia Tegra3). We guess the CPU would be Samsung 4412 or Amlogic RK3188. Bmorn K22 also supports WiFi, external 3G and HDMI output.

The Nerf Raider CS-35 large capacity magazine, amazing design and easy firing puts it ahead in the "dart gun" competition. With this gun in hand, you want to be in the front of the battlefield!

First impression:
Please note that this is a dart gun for kids, so the range and power will not be outstanding. What puts the Nerf raider ahead of its competition is the clip design, with it you can reload your gun faster than the older models. Not only that, the magazine that is bundled with this gun is an extra capacity, meaning longer fun. The Nerd Raider is different because much like a real shotgun, you have to "cock" it from the front of the gun. To make it easier for you, they have design it to where theres an easy handle.

The spring is light weight so even kids can use it. Through the combination of the grip system and the light weight spring, this gun will have a high rate of fire. So the big magazine feels pretty small in comparison on how fast you can shoot this thing.  Finally the design, its a futuristic build. Everything about this gun appeals to my eyes as it seemed like something from the future, the color is a perfect blend (although a bit flashy for stealth).

Performance:
Again, this is a toy meant for kids, so it definitely wont shot you eye out. Im well satisfied with the gun as it doesnt jam during the period I used it. Plus the range is pretty satisfactory for a dart gun, it can shoot an average of 25-30 ft (depending on the dart), and if you dont think this is enough, there are a lot of options and tutorials online on how to make your gun even stronger.

Conclusion:
Nerf Raider is by far the most popular gun to be used in the famous college game "Human V. Zombies" because of obvious reasons. Light weight, reliability, and high capacity magazine makes it a great gun to stop those marching zombies. Yes its still fun for kids to play around the living room also. For the price of $35 (including the high capacity magazine and 35 darts) this gun is a steal! Just make sure you buy extra magz for longer play.

App Engine SSL for Custom Domains in Testing

The long awaited SSL for Custom Domains is entering testing and we are now looking for trusted testers. If you are interested in signing up to test this feature, please fill in this form.

We will be offering two types of SSL service, Server Name Indication (SNI) and Virtual IP (VIP). SNI will be significantly less expensive than VIP when this service is launched, however unlike VIP it does not work in all browsers that support SSL. VIP is a premium service with a dedicated IP and full browser support. Both VIP and SNI support wildcard certificates and certificates with alternate names.

We look forward to making this widely available as soon as possible and as always we welcome your feedback in the group.

Intel Finished Optimizing Its 64 Bit Chips for Android 4 4 for KitKat

intel-haswell-mobile-u-chip-pins-bga Although the previous Intel Atom architecture was only 32-bit and had some hard limitations baked in it, the new one supports both 32-bit and the 64-bit extensions, just like Intel’s other chips, although for the very first versions of this architecture, the 64-bit extension seems to have been disabled (probably to save cost, and because the OS wouldn’t need it at the time anyway).

Intel is now saying that they’ve already finished pushing the 64-bit optimizations for KitKat. Intel is the one making sure the latest versions of Android work on its chips, so now they’ve not only made sure KitKat works on its latest Atom chips, but also that the 64-bit extension works, so they probably had to modify that version of KitKat to support 64-bit.

Google doesn’t yet support 64-bit in Android, but hopefully with all latest craze about ARMv8 and 64-bit chips, they’re going to use a Linux kernel that fully supports ARMv8 in the next version of Android, whether it’s Android 4.5 or 5.0 (I’m hoping 5.0, so we can already see devices coming out with it at the end of the year). Obviously, support for 64-bit was already baked in the old Linux kernels.

Speaking of ARMv8, though, what everyone is excited about when they say “64-bit” chips for smartphones, they are usually referring to ARMv8, and not necessarily to Intel64, and that’s because when Apple came out with the 64-bit enabled iPhone 5S, it showed some pretty impressive performance gains in more than one area, which Intel’s own Atom doesn’t have:

apple-64

Another advantage of ARMv8 over Intel’s x86-x64 is that the 32-bit and 64-bit architectures can actually be separated, and relatively soon. All we need is to have all chip makers get to the point where even their low-end chips are ARMv8, for Android to be 64-bit, and for Android apps to have a 64-bit version, too, which should take around 3 years. After that, chip makers could completely dump the 32-bit architecture support from ARMv8, and make chips a lot leaner, and therefore they can be made more efficient, more powerful and more cost-effective.

Even if Intel is able to do the same eventually, it’s going to be a lot harder because the 64-bit part is an extension of the 32-bit part, unlike with ARMv8 where the two parts are completely separated, and it won’t happen anytime soon, because there’s so much legacy stuff it needs to support in its chips.

I don’t think we’ll see any 64-bit Atom chips in smartphones until the second part of this year, which should be right around the time Cortex A53, Cortex A57 and Denver should be out.

Introducing the Google Phone Gallery

Here at Google, we’re thrilled with the global adoption of Android and with the high quality of devices that are coming to market around the world. Since there are so many great phones, we wanted to make the selection process a little easier for people who are in the market for a new one. Today we’re rolling out the Google Phone Gallery -- a showcase of Android-powered devices that deliver the best Google experience today. Check it out at http://www.google.com/phone.

All the phones in the gallery include Android Market, Google Search, and other Google Mobile services such as Gmail, Maps, and YouTube. There are tools that make it easy to compare phones side by side: you can filter phones by country, manufacturer, and carrier; view and compare technical specifications and features; and find where each phone is available for sale.

We’ll continue adding phones and countries over time, both to round out the gallery and as new phones come to market.
