Google I O and whats next for work
Posted by Amit Singh, President, Google for Work
Google I/O, our annual developer conference, is wrapping up this afternoon. I always love this event because its our chance to shine the spotlight on our amazing global developer community the creative coders who are building whats next. As we think about developers, along with our own products and tools, were focused on the big opportunities of the future: provide the best-in-class mobile platform, help the next billion users by putting the power of the Internet in their hands and solving big problems to make peoples lives better through machine learning and access to great products. There were lots of exciting announcements this year, from Now on Tap to a completely new Photos experience. If you havent already, be sure to watch the keynote given by Sundar Pichai, SVP of Products and read the official blog post. For cool scenes and coverage from the floor, check out our Google for Work at I/O Collection on Google+.
Im particularly excited that many of the announcements we made will impact the world of Google for Work and Google for Education. To highlight a few:
We know that technology works best when it gets out of the way and helps people get stuff done from anywhere. These announcements are a step in that direction: new approaches to managing email, powerful tools for developers to build great apps and an updated version of Android. The future of work is bright, and I cant wait to see what comes next.

For cool scenes and coverage from the floor, check out our Google for Work at I/O Collection on Google+.
Im particularly excited that many of the announcements we made will impact the world of Google for Work and Google for Education. To highlight a few:
- Android M. Androids latest release packs hundreds of performance improvements, including better battery life, easier app linking and streamlined permissions. And with our recent launch of Android for Work, the momentum for Android in the workplace is growing.
- Firebase. One of the key themes of this years I/O is empowering developers with the tools they need to thrive. To that end, Firebase makes building great mobile and web apps easier than ever. It manages the infrastructure on the backend on behalf of mobile developers so they can focus on the high-value stuff: delivering an awesome user experience on the front end. Firebase addresses key mobile use cases, including native support for offline usage when a network connection is unavailable, and automatic data synchronization in real time to the cloud and across diverse client devices. Nearly 200,000 developers rely on Firebase already, and Im confident it will help accelerate development of mobile apps, including enterprise apps. Check out the teams I/O Session to learn more.
- Inbox. Back in October, we introduced a new kind of inboxone that works for you. In March we announced the Inbox early adopter program, to bring Inbox by Gmail to Google Apps customers. And while were still in the early stages, at Google I/O we announced that were expanding the early adopter program so any Google Apps for Work customer who wants to use Inbox can. We also announced new ways Inbox can help save you time and stay organized, with Undo Send to take back emails you realize are a mistake, even from your mobile phone, and something many of you requested: custom signatures.
- Places API for iOS. We launched the Places API for Android in April, along with an iOS beta. Now the Places API for iOS is officially available for all developers with all the same features as the Android version. This means you can integrate Googles database of 100 million places worldwide into your app experience. Check out the announcement post to learn more and read customer experiences.
- Google Expeditions. Expeditions is a new educational tool that lets teachers take their classes on virtual field trips to anywhere using Google Cardboard. Its a great, inexpensive way for the next generation of creators to experience their world.
We know that technology works best when it gets out of the way and helps people get stuff done from anywhere. These announcements are a step in that direction: new approaches to managing email, powerful tools for developers to build great apps and an updated version of Android. The future of work is bright, and I cant wait to see what comes next.
Belgian employment agency VDAB offers job services at the speed of Google Apps
Posted by Michael De Blauwe, Project Leader of the Innovation Lab at VDAB
Editors note: Todays guest blogger is Michael De Blauwe, project leader of the Innovation Lab at VDAB, the public employment bureau for Belgiums Flanders region.
In the past, clients walked into one of our employment offices and waited to meet with one of our consultants. Today, they dont have to leave home to get face-to-face feedback on their resumes or participate in mock interviews. Timing is critical for job seekers, and at VDAB the public employment bureau for Flanders were using Google Apps to more quickly and efficiently help people in need of job services and training. Were also reaching more people while saving money by reducing the number of physical employment centers by nearly 30%.
What used to take a week for an in-person resume workshop followed by a practice interview, now happens in less than 24 hours. Our thousands of employment specialists use Google Hangouts and Google Docs to review customers resumes and coach them on interview skills. This digital transformation has been a hit with job seekers. In 2013, we had 4,920 people use our new e-coaching services, and 83% said they would recommend it to friends.
Were not just using Apps to serve more people were delivering better service. VDAB job coaches now use Google Drive to store resources and Docs to comment on clients resumes while speaking with them on Hangouts. All of a clients job-related files are stored in one place, with all feedback contained within the document.
Our team also works together more efficiently. Because our coaches work from different locations throughout Flanders, its helpful to have a central repository that allows people to share information and work together from different locations. We use Google Drive to share information about job openings and Google Sheets to track customer queries in a single document that everyone can access. Before Google, wed send thousands of emails back and forth to share resources, respond to customers, and schedule appointments.
When we made a company-wide push behind Apps in 2012, using our early Google adopters to inform others, we found that it was already taking hold. Now that all of VDAB has switched to Apps, were moving faster, helping more people build their job-seeking skills and matching more employers with qualified candidates.
We worked with Capgemini, a Google Apps Premier Partner in Belgium, who performed this successful migration.

HTC Sense 7 0 can we expect any of these

With HTC Sense 7.0 right around the corner I thought of making some little "wish-list" of a features I would love to see in the refreshed HTC UI. If you dont know yet - HTC Sense is so far the most advanced and by many known as the best custom Android User Interface. Apple has its iOS, Samsung has its plastic and HTC has its Sense UI.
None of the features are revolutionary, some of them are actually quite common or already available via 3rd party mods (like Sense Toolbox). The thing is, it would be great to have them (at least few of them) available out of the box. Lets go through the list!
- New section in / Settings / Personalize / called "Status bar" with the following features:
- possibility to remove the clock
- possibility to add XX % battery indicator, moved from / Settings / Power / Show battery level
- possibility to have only XX % battery indicator without the battery icon
- possibility to have both XX % indicator and a battery icon (current solution). All these features related to the battery level can be sorted this way: / Settings / Personalize / Status bar / Show battery level: show battery icon | show battery level | show both battery icon and level
- possibility to change between 4G and LTE icons
- Increase the number of icons inside a folder - for some reason the maximum number of icons inside a folder is 20. With so many games and applications in the Google Play its really strange limitation. Im not a gamer, but I have more then 20 games. Shell I have folders like "Games 1", "Games 2", "Games 3" etc?
- Possibility to create folders in the app drawer when using the Alphabetical mode. So far we can add folders only in the "Custom" view mode. I would like to organize icons inside the app drawer into folders and keep the aliphatic order of the icons outside folders.
- Possibility to customize the battery saver feature - HTC in the Sense 4+ UI introduced a very useful toggle to turn on/off battery saver. However, its barely possible to customize it, even in the HTC Sense 6.0. Possibility to change the moment when the power saver mode is turned on, the CPU min/max frequencies, screen dim level etc. would be really great.
- Move the Flashlight and the Calculator apps from the /data/preload back to the /system/app location. I know - this has barely anything to do with the user interface, however I cant find a proper explanation why HTC decided to let these 2 stock apps be on the /data partition instead a /system partition. Its not a big deal as long as the bootloader is not unlocked. After unlocking the bootloader the content of /data partition is being wiped, so both - pretty useful - apps are gone.
- Independent Lock Screen short-cuts. I really miss the possibility to use different short-cuts on the Lock Screen and different on the main screen.
- Easy copy phone number from the contact details page. Let me explain it this way - go to the People app, enter any contact and long press on the phone number. There is no "Copy" on the list. Instead, you need to select "Edit" first and then select the entire number and copy it. Why not making it easier with just "Copy" command on the long press menu?
- Restore the sliding ("scrolling") wallpaper. Or at least give provide an option in the / Setting / Personalize / Home screen to choose between "static" or "scrolling" wallpaper. I really liked that Android feature!
- Simple 1x1 alarm clock widget - it would be great to have one, small 1x1 widget that takes you directly to alarm clock settings.
So, what do you thing about these ideas? Do you think that some of them might be already in the HTC Sense 7.0? Or maybe you have something else in mind? Please share your opinion!

Meet the HTC One Max a Supersized HTC One

That big, bold beauty pictured above is the HTC One Max. There have been more than a few leaks about this product. Why? Theres a lot to love - literally and figuratively. Lets start with a quick video introducing the product:
The HTC One Max is everything you love about the HTC One, supersized! Heres the list of the most important device features:
- A massive 5.9 inch, 1080p display (Super LCD3)
- A gigantic 3300 mAH internal, non-removable Lithium Polymer battery
- A convenient rear fingerprint scanner for fast locking and launching of apps
- A side-mounted power button for fast and easy access
- 32 GB or 16 GB (varies by region) of internal storage, 2 GB of RAM
- microSD card support, up to 64 GB in size
- Android 4.3 with Sense 5.5
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor at 1.7 Ghz
- The same UltraPixel camera from the HTC One (4 MP, f/2.0, 28mm lens)
- 164.5 x 82.5 x 10.29mm in size, 217 grams in weight
- Supports Qualcomm QuickCharge 1.0, with an included 1.5A charger in the box
Battery life is the #1 thing consumers want to see improved, so if youre all about the long-lasting battery life, the HTC One Max is absolutely amazing. How amazing? Almost 55 hours of usage between charges. And this isnt putting it in power saving mode, turning things off constantly, etc. This is WiFi on, Bluetooth on, and GPS on during the daylight hours.

Part of what makes the battery life great is us using the Snapdragon 600 processor. The HTC One Max has the same screen resolution as the HTC One, which is a top performer, so the experience is the same on both devices, so while other devices in this category are shipping with the Snapdragon 800, its the day to day experience of using the device that matters more than the specs.
How does it compare, size-wise, to the HTC One and HTC One mini? A picture says it all:

Make no mistake, this is a big phone, but its amazing how quickly you can adapt to the larger size.
Its worth pointing out how great gaming is on a 5.9 inch screen. BoomSound is incredible - the speaker chambers are larger, so its even louder than the HTC One - and the camera experience is amazing with such a large screen. Sharing photos and videos with others on a 5.9 inch screen is a great experience!
Availability on specific carriers, and pricing, will be announced in the coming days/weeks. The best thing you can do is contact your wireless carrier via Twitter and ask them when the HTC One Max is coming - they need to see the enthusiasm consumers have for our phones. Remember the carrier decides whether or not to carry our phones and sell them to you.

Its been some time since we have had HTC Sense 5.0 on the market. In the past few weeks this, considered by many as the best Android UI, also has been released for HTC One X and HTC One X+.
We already know for a few months, that HTC has already been working on the next version of their famous UI - HTC Sense 5.5. Some of the Sense 5.5 features are already present in the latest HTC One Android 4.3 build, however they are currently disabled in the framework.

Stock system dumps Android 4 3 with HTC Sense 5 5 for HTC One

Very important update is out since yesterday for HTC One user. Android Revolution HD 30.0 - the world first custom ROM based on Android 4.3 & HTC Sense 5.5 for HTC One is available for download on XDA-Developers thread. However, there is always one problem when it comes to HTC updates - no RUUs (ROM Update Utility) officially available for download for regular users (HTC One Developer Edition and Google Edition seems to be the only exceptions). Why RUU is that important to us? I already made a short explanation here, but lets remind that again.
RUU (.exe) files for MS Windows are installers of complete firmware, including for example system or data partitions. Not having latest RUU means:
RUU (.exe) files for MS Windows are installers of complete firmware, including for example system or data partitions. Not having latest RUU means:
- users using custom ROMs cant download latest OTA from HTC,
- developers have no system dumps they can work with.
Ad. 1) If you want to download and flash latest OTA, your device must have completely stock system partition and recovery. Every OTA update is checking MD5 of each file on system partition to ensure .apk patch can be applied. If even one of 1000 files wont match, OTA update installation will fail. In this case you need to flash the latest official update you can find (even one year old) and later download official OTA updates.
Ad. 2) There are few workarounds, however none of them is as good as having a RUU:
- adb pull /system in custom recovery mode*
- cp /system /data/media/dump in custom recovery mode*
- nandroid backup
- boot partition can be taken from inside firmware.zip inside OTA .zip package or it can be dumped using dd if=</path/to/boot/partition> of=/data/media/boot.img
* adb pull, cp or dd commands must be executed from custom recovery mode, otherwise system dump will be missing few important files or these files will have 0kb size. Also, keep in mind that adb features are heavily limited on stock un-rooted device. In case of dd command, root access (su) is needed to make such operation.
Thats why I created my own stock system dumps (as a custom recovery .zip packages) for some HTC devices. I believe this can save a lot of time for many XDA users and developers.

Google Cardboard Seriously Fun
As simple as they are, cardboard boxes are pretty great. Maybe you transformed one into a fort or castle growing up. Or maybe your kids took last weeks package delivery and turned the box into a puppet theater. The best part about cardboard is that it can become anythingall you need is your imagination.
Its this same spirit that inspired our team to turn a smartphone, and some cardboard, into a virtual reality (VR) viewer earlier this year. Suddenly, exploring the Palace of Versailles was as easy as opening an app. And the response was kind of delightful.
Weve been working to improve Google Cardboard ever since. And todaywith more than half a million Cardboard viewers in peoples handsweve got a fresh round of updates for users, developers, and makers.
For users: more apps to enjoy, and more places to buy
There are now dozens of Cardboard-compatible apps on Google Play, and starting today were dedicating a new collection page to some of our favorites. These VR experiences range from test drives to live concerts to fully-immersive games, and they all have something amazing to offer. So give em a try today, and download the new Cardboard app to watch the collection grow over time.

Example apps for Cardboard (clockwise, from top left): Vanguard V 3D game, Paul McCartney concert, and Tilt Brush gallery.
If you dont have a Cardboard viewer yet, you can now pick one up from DODOcase, I Am Cardboard, Knoxlabs, and Unofficial Cardboard. And of course you can always build your own (with new specs below!).
For developers: SDKs for Android and Unity
If youve ever tried creating a VR application, then youve probably wrestled with issues like lens distortion correction, head tracking, and side-by-side rendering. Its important to get these things right, but they can suck up all your timetime youd rather spend on gameplay or graphics.
We want to give you that time back, so today were introducing Cardboard SDKs for Android and Unity. The SDKs simplify common VR development tasks so you can focus on your awesome, immersive app. And with both Android and Unity support, you can use the tools you already know and love. Download the SDKs today, and check out apps like Caaaaardboard! and Tilt Brush Gallery to see whats already possible.
For makers: tool-specific specs, and custom viewer calibration
To help bring VR experiences to everyone, we open sourced a Cardboard viewer specification earlier this year. Since then weve seen all sorts of viewers from all sorts of makers, and today were investing in this community even further.
For starters, were publishing new building specs with specific cutting tools in mind. So whether youre laser- or die-cutting your Cardboard viewers in high quantities, or carving single units with a blade, weve got you covered.
Once youve got your custom viewer, we also want to help you tailor the viewing experience to its unique optical layout. So early next year well be adding a viewer calibration tool to the Cardboard SDK. Youll be able to define your viewers base and focal length, for example, then have every Cardboard app adjust accordingly.
For the future: watch this space, and were hiring
The growth of mobile, and the acceleration of open platforms like Android make it an especially exciting time for VR. There are more devices, and more enthusiastic developers than ever before, and we cant wait to see whats next! Were also working on a few projects ourselves, so if youre passionate about VR, you should know were hiring.
Heres to the cardboard box, and all the awesome it brings.

* Print a test page to determine compatibility, as not every printer is supported;
* Print via Google Cloud Print (including save to Cloud Drive as PDF) at no extra-charge;
* Print 20 pages in Remote mode over the Internet.
For unlimited printing you need to purchase PrinterShare Premium Key, a separate small application that simply needs to be on the device to unlock Premium Features of the free app. Prior to buying the key we highly recommend printing the test page to ensure compatibility with your printer.

1) Requested permissions are needed to print content and are not used to collect your personal data. For a more detailed explanation see our FAQ at http://www.printershare.com/help-mobile-faq.sdf
2) Google Cloud Print requires latest version of Chrome browser on your computer or Google Cloud Print capable printer. For more setup instructions please read http://www.google.com/support/cloudprint/
3) If something isnt working as expected, please send us an email to support@printershare.com

HTC One won Gadget of the Year by T3

Since the release date, the HTC One has won almost every smartphone contest. Its won awards on many sites because of its unique design and great performance in conjunction with my favourite Android custom UI - HTC Sense. Now, months after the launch event in London, the HTC One has won yet another slew of awards - T3 Gadget of the Year, T3 Phone of the Year and finally T3 Design Award 2013! We are not hiding the fact that we are not surprised!
"The HTC One is a product designed to save a company in financial trouble and it seems HTCs design and engineering team work well with their backs against the wall.
This Android phone is the best product HTC has ever built, with a gorgeously thin, reassuringly rigid aluminium body bonded to the 4.7-inch screen by a technique that doesnt leave a single gap. And speaking of the screen, its eyeball-piercingly sharp, with a 1080p full HD resolution and Retina display-spanking pixel density of 468ppi. Its one of a handful of phones that can be mentioned in the same breath as the iPhone when it comes to looks and build quality.
Performance is no less impressive, with the quad-core processor blazing through tasks with nary a trace of lag and the 4MP Ultrapixel camera serving up some of the finest snaps weve ever seen from a smartphone."Source: Awards T3
Android Revolution HD in courtesy of HTC is giving away brand new HTC One to the lucky winner of the giveaway #RevolutionChange contest. Dont miss it!

The healthcare industry is moving to Google Apps for Work
Posted by Eran Feigenbaum, Director of Security, Google Apps for Work
Companies of all sizes across a number of industries have come to realize that cloud computing is transforming the way they run their business and how people work together. This is especially true for the healthcare industry, where access to information quickly, accurately and securely is vitally important.
Thats why organizations covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) rely on Googles robust infrastructure to store personal healthcare information. We provide the healthcare industry with the tools they need to help address HIPAA compliance and allow employees to have access to their information when they need it, where they need it. HIPAA compliance coverage for Google Apps for Work services includes Gmail, Calendar, Google Drive (including Docs, Sheets, Slides and Forms), Vault and Sites. New and existing Google Apps customers may obtain a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) from our Google Apps Help Center.
With millions of customers using Google Apps, HIPAA compliance is a critical feature for businesses and organizations that handle health care information, and an important consideration for hospitals, health organizations and governments. Joe Ganneman, CIO for Rockford Orthopedics, a leading bone and joint center in Illinois, believes that from a HIPAA compliance standpoint, you are actually in a better shape by putting your data in a cloud infrastructure like Googles, than you are trying to store it locally. And Flint Waters, CIO for the State of Wyoming, says that using Google Apps made us confident we would meet strict HIPAA requirements and demonstrate to our citizens that their data was on one of the most secure architectures out there.
HIPAA is just one of many regulations and standards Google supports, empowering our customers across different industries to benefit from the cloud. For organizations operating in highly regulated sectors, the use of Googles services provides the tools and protections needed to meet compliance requirements.

Google Calendar for iPhone more ways to stay on top of your schedule
Posted by Stella Schieffer, Product Manager
(Cross-posted on the Gmail Blog.)
Since the new Google Calendar app arrived, youve given us lots of great feedback that has guided our updates. Starting today, youll see improvements to Google Calendar on iPhone that follow the recent improvements to the Android app.
To start, you can now see more events at a glance with 7-day week view and customize your calendar with week numbers on iPhone.
You can now also add Google Drive files, like Docs and Sheets or pictures and PDFs, directly to events on your iPhone and Google Calendar on the web, just like you can on Android. Drive will even check if everyone has access to the files and if not, ask you if youd like to share with them.
Sometimes, getting notified of an upcoming event isnt enoughyou might need to contact other attendees, or figure out the best way to get there. With interactive notifications on the iPhone, you can now email guests and view maps with one tap.
We have a lot more improvements based on your feedback, so stay tuned!
P.S. If youre a developer, you can now add Drive files, including Docs, Sheets and Slides, to Google Calendar events created through the Calendar API.
