Voice Search in Russian Polish Czech and Turkish

Over the past few weeks we have launched Voice Search in four new languages: Russian, Polish, Czech and Turkish. Try speaking queries like “концерты Юлии Савичевой” (tour dates for Yulia Savicheva), “przepis na pierogi” (recipes for pierogi), “obrázky Hradčan” (pictures of the Prague castle), or “istanbul hava durumu” (weather in Istanbul). Note that you can only speak one language into the app at any time and that you’ll need to change your language setting first.

Voice Search is often preloaded on new Android devices. In that case, all you have to do is press and hold the search button and then speak your query. If you have an Android (2.0 or higher) phone but don’t have Voice Search installed, download the “Voice Search” app from Android Market. If you own an iPhone or other smartphone, you can download Google Mobile App with Voice Search from m.google.com

Click to call emergency information

(Cross-posted from the Google.org blog)

In November 2010, we began displaying relevant emergency phone numbers at the top of the results page for searches around poison control, suicide and other common emergencies in 14 countries. Today, we are making it even easier for you to quickly reach the help you may need by adding click-to-call capabilities for all of these emergency information search results.

We piggybacked on the way that our mobile ads team enabled click-to-call phone numbers in local ads on mobile devices. This capability enables businesses to make it even easier for customers to reach them when those customers search on Internet-enabled mobile devices. The functionality seemed ideal for the emergency information feature.

Previously, mobile users in one of these countries who conducted searches around poison control, suicide and common emergency numbers received a result showing the relevant emergency phone number.

People on mobile will now get the same result, but the phone number will be a link that allows you to dial the number instantly, just by clicking the link.

Now, the poison control result in Spain is click-to-call on a mobile phone

We hope this addition is a small step that helps connect people with crucial information that they need immediately.

We hope youll use the Forum not just when you need help, but also to share your enthusiasm and give tips and tricks to the whole mobile community. So stop by to introduce youself, and stay to ask and answer a few questions.

Various OEMs To Offer Ubuntu Smartphones Will Be Available In Multiple Regions

ubuntu1

We’ve heard plenty of talk about the famous ‘Ubuntu’ phone from Canonical in the past, surprisingly enough though there hasn’t been any word whatsoever about it at CES this year. At least so far. The Ubuntu phone which is going to be running a mobile version of the famous desktop OS, is still in the works and is on target as far as we know, and we do know some tidbits about it, just nothing so concrete regarding release dates, who will be making it, and how much it will cost.

What we know about the Ubuntu phone so far is that there will be a major manufacturer in the mix. Someone big, and someone that is well known by the masses. Canonical Founder Mark Shuttleworth had recently stated this fact, and Canonical Community Manager Jono Bacon had expanded a bit on this by saying that

I’m confident that in 2014 you’re going to see a number of Ubuntu Phones hitting the market. I can’t tell you [who it will be] right now but I can tell you that awesome things are happening.

He also pointed out and confirmed that Ubuntu phones are on the way, which he stated yesterday during “Ubuntu On Air”. Ubuntu On Air for those that are out of the loop is a youtube channel hosted by Bacon, where he does a monthly question and Answer session with viewers. Getting such confirmations about upcoming devices is great news for Ubuntu fans and even anyone that is just generally interested in the Ubuntu platform.

It’s obvious that Jono Bacon probably knows more information about the Ubuntu phones than he’s letting on, but didn’t want to cause any hiccups by compromising confidential agreements between Canonical and the OEMs. This is understandable as such situations are usually fragile and companies try to keep any sensitive information like this pretty tight. What Bacon was able to say however is that things are moving forward at a good pace and in a positive manner, between the OEMs and carriers. Bacon also mentioned that we will see various options of the Ubuntu phones, with some variations going to specific locations and carriers, and others being offered as an unlocked version on the web. There are no confirmations from Canonical about the timeframe or launch dates for devices, but Canonical has mentioned that Ubuntu Phones will come before Ubuntu tablets, which are on schedule to be optimized with the mobile OS by sometime in April. This means that we could see Ubuntu phones pop up relatively soon.

Apple sued for 2 Billion in Germany

Apple has been sued for $2 Billion by the German company, IPCom, due to alleged patent infringements.

The patent is for mobile phones giving priority to emergency calls over a cellular network. IPCom purchased the patent from Robert Bosch, a German automobile parts maker.

Seeing as this technology has existed in mobile phones for a long time, and virtually every phone uses the feature, its hard to see IPCom as having a real shot at getting an amount anywhere near what theyre asking for in the lawsuit. It seems to be a very obvious case of patent trolling, which is heavily practiced in the consumer technology space.

This isnt the first time, however, that this patent has been brought up in courts. Nokia has also been sued by IPCom, along with other cell phone manufacturers. HTC, Vodafone, Ericsson, Nokia, and Apple have all previously attempted to get this patent deemed invalid by the European Patent Office.

IPCom demands $2.12 Billion from Apple for the patent infringement. Apple hasnt been reached for comment on the lawsuit, but the Cupertino-based companys legal team probably isnt sweating bullets.
