The HTC M8 to be launched on 25 03 2014

It seems that we finally know the date – 25.03.2014 looks like the day when HTC will launch their new flagship device and the HTC One (M7) successor – HTC One M8 which is rumoured to be called "HTC One+" or "HTC One 2" or just " HTC One (M8)".

About the device itself we know pretty much already. Recently we wrote about the design (The HTC One 2014 (M8) design exposed) and weve seen some popular mock-ups made by hamdir in HTC One 2014 (M8) target renders, a visual compilation of all the leaks. I must say this all looks promising and we still hope to see HTC M8 equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 instead of an already one year old Snapdragon 800 SoC.

Various OEMs To Offer Ubuntu Smartphones Will Be Available In Multiple Regions

ubuntu1

We’ve heard plenty of talk about the famous ‘Ubuntu’ phone from Canonical in the past, surprisingly enough though there hasn’t been any word whatsoever about it at CES this year. At least so far. The Ubuntu phone which is going to be running a mobile version of the famous desktop OS, is still in the works and is on target as far as we know, and we do know some tidbits about it, just nothing so concrete regarding release dates, who will be making it, and how much it will cost.

What we know about the Ubuntu phone so far is that there will be a major manufacturer in the mix. Someone big, and someone that is well known by the masses. Canonical Founder Mark Shuttleworth had recently stated this fact, and Canonical Community Manager Jono Bacon had expanded a bit on this by saying that

I’m confident that in 2014 you’re going to see a number of Ubuntu Phones hitting the market. I can’t tell you [who it will be] right now but I can tell you that awesome things are happening.

He also pointed out and confirmed that Ubuntu phones are on the way, which he stated yesterday during “Ubuntu On Air”. Ubuntu On Air for those that are out of the loop is a youtube channel hosted by Bacon, where he does a monthly question and Answer session with viewers. Getting such confirmations about upcoming devices is great news for Ubuntu fans and even anyone that is just generally interested in the Ubuntu platform.

It’s obvious that Jono Bacon probably knows more information about the Ubuntu phones than he’s letting on, but didn’t want to cause any hiccups by compromising confidential agreements between Canonical and the OEMs. This is understandable as such situations are usually fragile and companies try to keep any sensitive information like this pretty tight. What Bacon was able to say however is that things are moving forward at a good pace and in a positive manner, between the OEMs and carriers. Bacon also mentioned that we will see various options of the Ubuntu phones, with some variations going to specific locations and carriers, and others being offered as an unlocked version on the web. There are no confirmations from Canonical about the timeframe or launch dates for devices, but Canonical has mentioned that Ubuntu Phones will come before Ubuntu tablets, which are on schedule to be optimized with the mobile OS by sometime in April. This means that we could see Ubuntu phones pop up relatively soon.
